The referral for this project was from the owners of a custom home built in Woodbine, MD. For this Columbia/MD project, the homeowners liked to entertain and wanted a space that made guests feel welcome. The existing kitchen needed additional square footage and they wanted more windows and natural light. Their existing deck also needed attention.
The homeowners had an architectural plan drawn. Initially our company was hired to do renovation of the kitchen and build the addition. When it came time for cabinet bids, they opted for us to build their kitchen, as well as build their new deck!
Some of the challenges of this project were that we took apart their kitchen and floors in order to build the addition. This would have rendered them unable to use their kitchen during construction. In order to to alleviate some of the burden, we put in a temporary kitchen in the build space, equipped with a stove, sink, dishwasher, and fridge they could use.
Every evening after work, we would do our best to clean the work site, so that they could function in their make shift kitchen! The entire back wall of their existing kitchen was taken down for the addition. This led to spanning concerns regarding the desire to have no interior supports. The architect and engineers wanted interior supports (which would have obstructed their beautiful view and natural light). We came up with an idea of using reinforced steel to hold the brick and second floor structures, which enabled their desired, unobstructed view. The steel beam weighed over 1500 lbs and had to be supported all the way through down to the basement with additional footings to hold the beam and point loads. All of this was installed while working around the existing temporary, but functioning kitchen! The kitchen cabinets themselves had some unique custom design. Their new kitchen design did not have space for a walk in pantry. The homeowners requested custom cabinetry that would have the ability to store a lot of food. We built a stunning wall of cabinetry for storage with 2 custom pantry cabinets that fold out to give better access to back of pantry items. Other unique features included plate organizers and pan organizers, as well as a cubby for their coffeemaker.
By adding more appliances, we had to upgrade their electrical panel, which led to an entire electrical system upgrade. We build a custom Trex deck with a tree planter and stairs.
